I scheduled my first flight lesson for this Sunday!
I am very excited. The only part I am nervous about is that i know I will want to go more and that isn’t something I car really afford right now.
It costs an average of $9,900 for a private license. I guess if I really do love it I can try to get
scholarships for learning and student loans etc.... Fuck I am excited
. To celebrate post your favorite plane!
My favorite 2 are the Cessna 441 Conquest II and the Learjet 25 (preferably the 1st generation)

fucking nice dude! I also started my first day at this aviation academy funded and pushed for by the FAA. I’m currently a high school sophomore and by the time I graduate high school I’ll have an Associate’s degree in engineering, a private pilot’s license and/or a professional drone operators license. even better that it’s all free too, I’m super excited for everything. the school is a hangar on an airstrip too which is even cooler, I see planes take off and land here a lot. hell, my second period teacher’s commute to school is him flying him self in a Cessna from Tampa! two wings good and godspeed to both of us, for sure!

thanks, and good luck with everything! keep posting stuff about this, you’ll probably learn stuff before me and maybe it’ll help me, and shiiiiit , if I learn anything that’s relevant to you I could help too? I know it sounds kinda ridiculous but just trying to help if I can. sorry. just super jumpy and excited again.

Please tell me more.

That would be awesome and I really like JetBlue (biased from being from Long Beach ), BUT $125K is a lot of money

No of course! I will post a lot about it of course. And I look forward to posts about your classes.

Just an overview of the program, who sponsors it, where to get more info. I’ve got a rising HS sophomore who may be interested in a similar program. Got any links etc?

Nice!!! Enjoy the ride - it’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun, too!! Here’s a Waco YMF-5 (new).

ok. it’s called the Florida Aviation Academy and is a t Kissimmee Gateway Airport. it’s sponsored and paid for by the similarly acronymed Federal Aviation Agency (FAA). classroom environment is in a literal hangar that has rooms attached, the hangar is more of the main area of the school. we currently have about 200 students so the teachers focus on your student and cater to his needs and career needs more specifically. that number, as well as staff, will increase once we add t his other building into the school property that they will purchase. it’s really good and people are smart and nice. here’s a link: www.aerospace schools.org and I’ll post more replies to you shortly with pictures of the provided info we were given on paper. sorry, it might take a little bit of time.

If $125k gets you 1,500 hours including multi-engine time, that’s a freaking bargain and you should jump on it. Average of $83/hour, and that doesn’t even count the classroom.

That’s awesome! Enjoy it!

nice. as of right now I think its only in Florida right here but I know they're looking to expand.

Add me to the list of people who look forward to updates as you go through this! So jealous - maybe I would have been a pilot if something like this was offered to me - good luck!

holy schnikeys Batman! $125K?!?!?!

thanks! just last week I was stupid and worrying about my social life....I had nothing to worry about lol. this is hella worth it. my dad and even little miss sensible sister was telling me WHAT THE HELL IS WRO NG WITH YOU THIS IS THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME!!! I then said fuck it, why not? also I felt like not going because what I want to do is start my own car company in the future, but this is a good opportunity and a money making one to fund that company later on. that, and the Associate’s I’m gonna get isn’t just in aviation, it’s in engineering o verall so I could do anything with that, like building off of it into a bachelor's and I'm aiming for masters. all in all, good stuff!
![]() 08/15/2018 at 19:29 |

I don’t disagree that it is a good bargain. But at many times my yearly salary and in Florida it isn’t something I think I can take advantage of.

Yeah 20 is at least very interesting XD. I am very excited. Maybe someday I’ll get to buzz the shop XD

Thanks, I shall enjoy it very much.
Neat plane for sure

It is good stuff!! And yeah, life has a way of changing quickly, when you least expect it.
This is a great background for any kind of technical career - not just aviation.
![]() 08/15/2018 at 19:38 |
|
Yeah - it’s not for everyone, but that steep cost is well worth it, if that’s the direction you want to go.
![]() 08/15/2018 at 19:43 |

Yeah that is true. Gotta see what I am able to do etc. This is only the first lesson after all

The 70's, dude . This place was the wild west. 12-minute round trips to LO in a ‘73 RSR on a bet, all kinds of craziness.

Man... The things I would do to be here in that time with a well bit of cash.

I’m excited for you. I do want to take lessons, but I have so many other responsibilities in front of that, that I have little hope it will ever happen.
Do it for those of us who can’t!

Thanks. I can’t wait to start. I shall try to make all OpPoS proud

That’s great! Have you started ground school yet? I finished my first test Monday and will have my first flight lessons this weekend too!

If you can’t afford a private pilot’s license right away, why not get a license for ultralights? There are some very plane-like ultralights out there!
![]() 08/16/2018 at 06:42 |
|
Of course, ultralight means different things in different parts of the world, too.
In the US, no license required at all for a Part 103 ultralight (for powered craft, one seat, less than 254 pounds empty not including parachute and floats, maximum 5 gallons fuel capacity, 55 kts maximum airspeed in level flight at full power, 24 kts maximum power-off stall speed).
There’s also the Light Sport Aircraft class and the associated sport pilot license for things that are more... substantial... than Part 103 ultralights, with lower requirements than a full private pilot license. (Maximum t wo seats, 1320 lbs max takeoff weight for non-seaplanes, 120 kts maximum airspeed in level flight, 45 kts maximum stall speed.)

|
I know little about the classes in the US and Canada sadly, just thought it would be a far cheaper alternative to get some flight time! :)
A friend of mine’s dad has his private pilot’s license, but hasn’t flown in years....not enough time on his schedule sadly, and also doesn’t own his own plane the the closest place to rent / share one from is over an hour away from here, which doesn’t help....

Well I have a gift certificate for my first lesson, so I am going to use it. After that we will see.

No, I have not started anything yet. I have a gift certificate for my first flight lesson. 30 minutes ground and 30 minutes air

Enjoy! :D

Ah, a “discovery” flight! That’s great! I have over 8 hours of flight scheduled for the weekend. It’s going to be fun, but it’s also going to be rough.
![]() 08/16/2018 at 11:50 |
|
Yeah it is not much, but I am excited . Holy fuck 8 hours?! That sounds both amazing and super tiring
![]() 08/16/2018 at 13:22 |
|
Well, it’s the plan. It will be tiring. But it’s the only way I can get my flight hours in so I can get ready to solo. It seems that flight instructors aren’t willing to share responsibility and they were having a hard time finding an instructor in Baton Rouge that would cooperate. So, I’m going to have a few weekends of intense training to get me ready to solo, then I will be able to fly whenever/where ver I can.
![]() 08/16/2018 at 13:36 |
|
Hmm, odd about the instructors. G ood luck!
![]() 08/16/2018 at 13:41 |
|
Thanks. Same to you.
I guess it’s not so odd about the instructors. I’m not sure I would be willing to sign off on a student who only attended half of my classes, even if they spent half their time in training somewhere else.
![]() 08/16/2018 at 13:49 |
|
Don’t you have to log all your time? I don’t see why they would have an issue accepting you r logged hours.
![]() 08/16/2018 at 13:58 |
|
Technically, pilots are not required to log all of their hours, only those that they wish to use to apply for a certification or rating. Students must log all of their hours so they can get certified. The problem is that while the hours logged have some description of what you were doing, they aren’t detailed. Something in the training might be missed if the instructors aren’t talking to each other. That’s what the Houston instructors are concerned about.

Ah I guess that makes sense.
